Google recently announced their Google Fiber for Communities Project. It aims to bring 1Gbit speed +/- connections to one lucky municipality. As such, cities across the country have geared up their residents to start voting for their town. This won’t happen in the New York’s or Chicago’s of America. The goal is to choose a city w/ 50,000 to 500,000 residents. The implementation is actually quite complicated and many are skeptical given the technical, cost and technology hurdles. Google plans to wire each residence in the chosen municipality with a direct fiber optic feed. As Google states…
“…We’re planning to build and test ultra high-speed broadband networks in a small number of trial locations across the United States. We’ll deliver Internet speeds more than 100 times faster than what most Americans have access to today with 1 gigabyte per second, fiber-to-the-home connections. We plan to offer service at a competitive price to at least 50,000 and potentially up to 500,000 people…”
Would appear things didn’t go so well for Martha Stewart during the Design Indaba in South Africa…
